The city is named for C.O. Sanford, a railroad engineer that was instrumental in the construction of the railroads throughout the area. It is known as the “Brick Capital of the USA” because it produced 10% of the bricks in the country in 1959. Brick production in the city remains today. The city is a large one as well, covering an area of 30 square miles, and is home to over 30,000 people.
